Our aim is to try and keep the members informed of new events such as training via email but as there are so many spam emails these days most email providers/clients have very strict filtering of spam messages. If you are not receiving emails and especially if you use webmail such as gmail, yahoo, hotmail or AOL it is likely that your email provider/client is filtering these emails and delivering them direct to your spam/junk folder.
We have registered the outgoing mail server with as many of these email providers as possible but this does not mean that the emails will still not end up in spam/junk folders, to make sure these emails are delivered to your inbox you need to add the sender email addresses to your whitelist. As there are so many webmail providers available and they all use different mechanisms for whitelisting email addresses it is beyond the scope of this help to give instructions on how to do this; we suggest you read the help provided by your specific email provider on how to add addresses to your whitelist.
If possible you should whitelist the entire domain (@stjohnmalta.vr-sar.org) but not all webmail providers allow this and if this is the case we will send the majority of emails using the following addresses which you will need to whitelist individually
- admin@stjohnmalta.vr-sar.org
- info@stjohnmalta.vr-sar.org
- training@stjohnmalta.vr-sar.org
We also recommend that you periodically check your spam/junk folders as the above list of addresses is not the definitive list of senders and emails from other addresses at ferniesar.vr-sar.org could still end up in your spam/junk folders.
Text (SMS) notifications
Whilst editing your cell phone details you can optionally select your cell provider and enable notifications to be sent via text to your cell phone. The texts are sent using a feature provided by your cell provider and therefore the caller id number the message is from is likely to be 6245 (which spells MAIL on a cell phone keypad). As an email notification can be quite lengthy we will not send you the entire email as a text but instead send a cut down version that will in most cases will be less than 160 characters to limit the notification to one text message.
If you are having problems receiving emails or do not check your emails regularly this can be a useful feature to ensure you are up to date with events.
If you opt to disable notifications (see below) the text message notification will also be disabled regardless of the whether you have selected to receive that notification as a text.
NOTE: If you have to pay for text messages with your cell phone contract you will also be charged by your cell phone provider for these notifications.
Disabling notifications
The site implements an opt out policy for notifications which means by default you will receive all notifications however whilst editing your account details you can opt to disable notifications for various categories as follows
- General - Ad hoc changes such as new content added to the site.
- New content notifications - New content added to the site such as events, news items etc...
- User account notifications - Administration changes are made to your user account (not when you make changes).
- Registration notifications - Event registration, cancellations, reminders etc...
- Expiry notifications - Expiry of certifications or memberships.
Notifications can be disabled in two areas whilst editing your account as follows
- Account information tab - Will disable all notifications.
- Availability tab - Will only disable notifications whilst you are out of town and uses the Leaving At and Returning At fields to determine whether to send the notification or not.
